Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro journey starts with a transfer from the hotel toward Machame Gate on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, your guide completes the necessary registration while the porters organize food, tents and group equipment. Once the park procedures are finished, the trek begins.

The first day's trail passes through dense montane rainforest. The environment is green, humid and rich in vegetation, including tall trees, ferns and mosses.

Rain can occur in this zone, so waterproof clothing and properly broken-in hiking boots are important. Depending on natural wildlife movement, monkeys and forest birds may occasionally be encountered.

The route climbs steadily before reaching Machame Camp at approximately 3,000 meters. The support crew prepares dinner and camp while climbers rest.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, the route leaves the rainforest and continues into the heath and moorland zone.

The vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens as elevation increases. The trail includes rocky sections and provides wider views across the mountain and surrounding plains.

On clear days, climbers may see Mount Meru in the distance and the higher slopes of Kibo ahead.

The trail continues toward the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape on the western side of Kilimanjaro.

After reaching Shira Camp, the group rests and prepares for the next day's important acclimatization trek toward Lava Tower.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Day three is an important acclimatization stage. After breakfast, the route moves eastward toward increasingly dry alpine terrain.

Climbers gradually ascend toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 meters. This elevation is substantially higher than Barranco Camp, where the group will sleep.

Depending on timing and weather, lunch may be taken around Lava Tower. The guide monitors the group closely for any signs of altitude difficulty.

After reaching the day's highest point, the route descends into Barranco Valley. This climb-high and sleep-lower profile is one of the useful altitude features of Machame.

Barranco Camp lies beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall and provides one of the route's most recognizable mountain views.

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga

Day four begins with the ascent of Barranco Wall. Although the wall can appear intimidating from camp, climbers follow a well-established trekking route through rocky steps and switchbacks.

Some sections require the use of hands for balance, but it is not a technical rock-climbing route. Your mountain guides provide support through the steeper sections.

After reaching the top, the route crosses several ridges and valleys toward Karanga. This is where the six-day Machame itinerary differs significantly from the seven-day version.

Rather than sleeping at Karanga, the six-day group continues farther toward Barafu Camp on the same day.

Vegetation becomes increasingly limited as the trail enters alpine desert. The group finally reaches Barafu at approximately 4,673 meters.

Barafu is the final camp before the summit attempt. Climbers eat, hydrate, organize warm clothing and receive a summit briefing from the lead guide.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Summit day normally begins around midnight. Climbers wake, dress in warm summit layers and begin ascending under headlamp light.

The route climbs steadily over steep volcanic terrain. The pace is deliberately slow because of the high altitude and reduced oxygen.

The group first aims for Stella Point at approximately 5,756 meters on Kilimanjaro's crater rim.

Reaching Stella Point is a major achievement, but climbers who remain strong enough continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak stands at approximately 5,895 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the African continent.

Summit time is normally limited because of the cold, altitude and long descent ahead. After taking photographs, the group begins descending toward Barafu.

Climbers normally rest briefly at Barafu before continuing downward toward Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final descent begins through increasingly green terrain toward the rainforest.

The trail can become wet and slippery, so climbers should continue to use trekking poles where helpful and take care on downhill sections.

On arrival at Mweka Gate, the park exit formalities are completed and the Kilimanjaro trek officially ends.

Depending on park procedures, eligible climbers may receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle.

You are then driven back toward Moshi, Arusha or the accommodation specified in the confirmed booking.
