Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer toward Machame Gate on the southwestern side of the mountain.

At the gate, your guide completes registration while porters organize food, tents and group mountain equipment.

The trek begins through dense montane rainforest. This section can be humid and wet, particularly after rainfall.

The trail steadily gains altitude as the group moves through thick vegetation toward Machame Camp.

After reaching camp, the mountain crew prepares dinner and camping arrangements while climbers rest.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, the trail leaves the dense forest and enters Kilimanjaro's heath and moorland zone.

Vegetation becomes shorter while the views open toward the upper mountain and surrounding landscape.

The trail becomes rockier as climbers approach the Shira Plateau.

Shira Camp lies at approximately 3,840 meters and provides the second mountain overnight.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Day three is an important acclimatization stage.

The group climbs through increasingly dry alpine terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 meters.

Reaching this elevation exposes climbers to significantly higher altitude than the camp where they will sleep.

Depending on timing and weather, lunch may be taken around Lava Tower before beginning the descent.

The trail drops toward Barranco Valley and reaches Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 meters.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The morning starts with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall.

Climbers follow rocky steps and natural ledges. Some sections require hands for balance, but the standard route is not normally considered technical rock climbing.

From the top of the wall, the trail continues across valleys and ridges toward Karanga.

Karanga Camp sits at approximately 4,035 meters.

The overnight at Karanga is the important additional stage that differentiates this itinerary from the six-day Machame program.

Climbers have additional time to eat, hydrate and rest before continuing toward Barafu the following day.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The trek continues from Karanga into Kilimanjaro's dry alpine desert.

The route is shorter than the Barranco-to-Barafu stage used on a six-day itinerary, giving climbers more time for summit preparation.

Barafu Camp stands at approximately 4,673 meters.

Once at camp, climbers eat, hydrate and organize all required summit equipment.

The lead guide explains the summit schedule and checks how everyone is responding to the altitude.

Climbers normally rest early because the summit attempt begins during the night.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Summit day begins around midnight or late at night from Barafu Camp.

Climbers wear their warmest mountain layers and begin ascending slowly under headlamp light.

The route climbs over steep volcanic terrain toward Stella Point at approximately 5,756 meters.

At this elevation, the reduced oxygen and cold conditions make every step more demanding.

Climbers who are able to continue from Stella Point follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 meters above sea level and is the highest point in Africa.

After photographs and a short summit stop, the descent begins toward Barafu.

Climbers normally rest at Barafu before continuing much farther down toward Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final morning begins with breakfast before descending toward Mweka Gate.

The route passes through increasingly green vegetation and eventually enters Kilimanjaro's rainforest.

The trail may become slippery after rain, so careful downhill walking remains important.

At Mweka Gate, the park exit procedures are completed and the mountain trek officially finishes.

Climbers then meet their transfer vehicle and return toward Moshi, Arusha or the accommodation listed in the booking.
